We are almost there. This week let's think about Image Management Systems, Calendars and Other Time Management Tools.
It's as if, I am looking into the bottom of the "Portal" box for the last few goodies of "Portalism" and finding a few items that might have slipped our notice earlier. Image management, in the sense of photo and illustration management, can make or break a good portal. Photos can be as important as text in presenting yourself to the web. We have long known how much it helps to be able to visualize the person on the other end of your internet connection. It makes them more personable and easier to work with. But simple headshots is not the end of it. Photography in itself has become a great way to communicate and express oneself. One need only look at the popularity of social software like "Flickr", to see how relevant such systems have become. I would be remiss, if we did not look at some of our open source options and how they plug into our portal systems.
Now, I am probably the last person in the world, quallified to talk about calendars. I live on retirement time....which means, "I'll get around to it". But to many of you, having a calendar out in a public place like your portal can be an effective communication tool regarding your and their time. Making calendars interactive and collaborative stretches their capability far beyond those old Norman Rockwall calendars that used to hang on the side of our refrigerators. Modern calendars have become scheduling devices and as such very much suitable into the portal scheme of things.
Enjoy this week. For any of you who are counting, my grand baby is due only 13 days from now....I think I will pencil that in on my calendar OR if he comes early, Ill take photos and put them on my image management program to share with you.
