This week we will be looking at *Installing Chat Rooms, Audio and Video, and Telephonic Communication.* I will continue to work on adding elements to the Elderville Practice Portal. As I get further into the Joomla, I am finding that the community around which it is built is not as old as some of the other support communities for other Content Management Systems, like PHPNuke or Drupal or others. In that sense, some of the better modules have not yet been re-written from the parent Mambo system into language that can be used in the Joomla. I am continuing to try to find work arounds, and am now playing with reconstructing some of the Mambo elements on my own, using Joomla guides. I will just have to let you know if these work out.
For this week, lets:
*Look at some chat rooms. The best place to start would be the TappedIn Sunday Morning Webhead getogether at 12.GMT. Lot's of webheads go there on Sunday Morning to socialize and get information from each other. I will be there, and hopefully Vance and Buth. Let me know if you come in the room and dont notice you. While you are at it. You might also want to take a look at the "Building a Web Presence Through Open Source Web-based Portals" Moodle at the section title "Erecting Chat Rooms. There are review materials there, and a look at the built in Moodle Chat Module. There is also a link to the Elderchat room which is built on the PHPChat platform. Go ahead and pick any name and password, and you can try it out. I have not set up the password mechanism yet so anything you choose should work. This gives you three examples to look at and try.
*Multi-media has become an increasingly important aspect of multi-literacy. Another potential element of portal ware is multi-media. This area is fairly well covered by other classes in the EVOnline course list, so I am going to make a fairly breif foray into this subject. We will look primarily at some Audio and Video additions to Portals that can enhance the over-all web presence.
*Finally, I'd like to take a fairly bold look at Telephony. We will look as some ways regular phone, cell phones and VOIP phones can be tied together to increase the scope and power of your web presence portal. I think you are really going to like this section.
*Remember, there is no pass or fail here....only learning. Feel free to explore all you want, and to collaborate in any way you can or you desire. Post to the Moodle forums whenever you can, and failing that, post to the yahoogroup. Check in on the Elderville practice portal every few days, as it continues to change and grow. See ya' in Week Three.
